“GMC Hummer EVs were envisioned to be the most capable and compelling electric supertrucks ever,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “The new Hummer EV SUV is the next chapter, offering more options for customers to tailor the truck to their lifestyles while continuing to encourage them to forge new paths with zero emissions.”
EV Power and Performance
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is driven by GM’s new Ultium propulsion technology and is fitted with a 20-module battery system that GMC says will be capable of about 300 miles of range. Why just 300 miles of range when the pickup is said to get 350 miles? The answer is simple, really. The Hummer EV pickup’s wheelbase of 135.6 inches is long enough to accommodate a 24-module battery pack, whereas the SUV’s slightly shorter 126.7-inch wheelbase only fits a 20-module pack. Four fewer modules means 50 fewer miles, approximately.
The Ultium propulsion system in the Hummer EV SUV will be capable of producing a maximum of 830 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, according to GMC. Again, we’re left with the question of why only 830 hp when the top pickup will be rated at 1,000. The answer here also involves the SUV’s slightly smaller 20-module battery pack. With both vehicles utilizing the same 255-kW motors (code-named X80 or X79 when ganged as a pair) the answer simply comes down to the fact that the smaller battery pack operates at a slightly lesser voltage. Less voltage means less initial torque, which ultimately means less horsepower. That’s the oversimplified version of the story, anyway.
With Watts to Freedom mode (or simply WTF mode for the 12-year-old in all of us), GMC estimates the Hummer EV SUV will be capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. When Watts to Freedom is engaged, the vehicle will dial in the suspension and precondition the motors. While it does this, the interior screens, audio system, and haptic seats will entertain the occupants. This process can take less than 10 seconds, which is far less than a Tesla entering Ludicrous mode. For comparison, the slightly larger and slightly more powerful Hummer EV pickup shaves half a second off this time, doing 0 to 60 mph in WTF mode in just 3.0 seconds.
The Hummer EV SUV will come with a total of five drive modes, which include Extract, Terrain, Tour, Off-Road, and Tow-Haul. Adrenaline is a submode and is how WTF mode is accessed.
The Hummer EV SUV will be equipped with GM’s enhanced Super Cruise hands-free driver assist feature, as well.
Wait 11,500 lb-ft of Torque?
When GMC announced the Hummer EV pickup last year, the company said it would come with 11,500 lb-ft of torque, a figure that seemed so outside the realm of reality that many chuckled. Well, GMC is doubling down on the claim by rating the Hummer EV SUV at 11,500 lb-ft, as well. It has even gone as far as to put the 11,500 lb-ft number as the top spec displayed in the driver information screen when showing power in WTF mode.
When the Hummer EV pickup debuted, we set to work to debunk this number. The 11,500 lb-ft number is total wheel torque and is achieved by multiplying the motor torque by gear ratio. Each of the Hummer EV’s electric motors is rated at about 350 lb-ft of torque, while the front motor is geared at 13.4:1 and the rear motors at 10.1:1. Multiply it out, and you’ll land close to the claimed 11,500 figure. The reality is, the torque figure GMC should claim is 1,050 lb-ft—the combination of the three motors’ output before gear reduction.
It Can Charge Other EVs, Too.
An interesting feature that will be available on all but the base model Hummer EV SUV will be bi-directional charging capability. Using an accessory cable and converter box, the Hummer EV SUV will be able to export up to 3 kW of 110-volt or 6 kW of 220-volt power directly from its charge port. This can be useful for powering everything from a camping trailer in the woods to supporting your home in the event of a blackout. And with a special double-ended charge cable, the Hummer EV SUV will be able to top off other EVs, as well.
Speaking of charging, the Hummer EV SUV’s charge port is located at the rear of the vehicle, where a typical fuel door would be. This allows owners to back into spots at the fast charger and allow the cable to reach with ease. All models have the ability to use 800-volt DC fast charging (optional on the base model), and the upper trims can support onboard 19.2 kW AC charging, which is useful for those who have a Level 2 home charger and wiring capable of flowing 80 amps. Plan accordingly if you intend to fast-charge your Hummer at home and haven’t installed the wiring yet.
Can it Hold the Hummer Name Off-Road?
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will be a true beast of an off-roader. Four-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, as is air suspension. Standard hardware also includes Extract mode, which can raise the vehicle up to 6 inches above normal ride height (and 4 inches above off-road height) to clear large hazards on the trail. Also standard on the higher trim models is CrabWalk, which utilizes the vehicle’s rear steering to essentially walk the vehicle sideways around or away from hazards. Vehicles with rear steering also benefit from a turning circle of just 35.4 feet, or about the same as Chevrolet Bolt EV.
The Hummer EV SUV boasts a breakover angle of 32.2 degrees and departure angle of 45.6 degrees (removing the spare tire bumps departure angle up to 49.0 degrees). Like the pickup, the Hummer EV SUV has approximately 13 inches of suspension travel at each corner. The Hummer EV SUV can climb an 18-inch vertical wall and has the ability to ford up to 32 inches of water.
For those who want all of the comforts of the high-end models with even more off-road goodies, owners can option the Hummer EV SUV with the Extreme Off-Road package. This bonus pack adds $5,000 to the cost and brings 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels, 35-inch mud-terrain tires (35-inch all-terrain tires are standard), steel rock sliders, underbody armor, virtual rear lockers, an electronic front locker, heavy-duty ball-spline half-shafts, GMC’s UltraVision camera system with underbody cameras, and more.
Best of all, GMC says that 37-inch tires fit the Hummer EV SUV with no modifications necessary and that the larger rolling stock will be sold through its dealer network.
An Interior Much Like the Pickup, but Not
Inside, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV shares a similar five-passenger layout with the Hummer EV pickup. GMC’s new Infinity Roof with removable Sky Panels and front I-bar is standard on all Hummer EV SUVs. Combining the removable roof with rear window glass that retracts into the door provides owners with nearly a convertiblelike open-air experience. The four roof panels will store in padded travel bags and fit neatly inside the Hummer EV SUV’s front trunk (or frunk, for those inclined to call it that). The center I-bar stores in the rear hatch, and tools for removing the I-bar will be included with the vehicle.
The Hummer EV SUV has plenty of storage space for all of your adventures. The vehicle boasts an impressive 36 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row and an even greater 81 cubic feet with the second row folded flat. The rear power hatch door opens beyond 90 degrees, and the storage area can fit a 4-foot-wide sheet of whatever you need from the home improvement store.
Technology is the name of the game, naturally, and like the pickup, the Hummer EV SUV comes with a pair of large dash-mounted screens. The digital driver information screen measures 12.3 inches, and the infotainment screen checks in at 13.4 inches. Both screens are almost fully customizable. The navigation system will even help drivers find charging stations and plan for off-road adventure with integrated trail maps.
There are also several space-themed Easter eggs throughout the Hummer EV SUV’s cabin. These include a topographical map of the surface of the moon in the cargo area. Shown is the Sea of Tranquility, where Neil Armstrong touched down on the Apollo 11 mission. The front speaker covers mimic this graphic, as well, along with a boot print signifying our first steps on the lunar surface.
Edition 1 models come cladded in imitation leather and feature an interior color dubbed “Lunar Shadow.” In fact, the faux leather used throughout the vehicle was done to promote sustainability and avoid the use of animal hides.
GMC says the Hummer EV SUV will launch with a collection of more than 200 available accessories.
All the Models
At launch, the new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will be available in the exclusive Edition 1 trim. Edition 1 is the top trim and will come with all of the available bells and whistles, including 35-inch tires, 22-inch wheels, assist steps, and floor liners. Why it’s a big deal that the Edition 1 gets floormats is a mystery to us, but it’s what GMC chose to share, so floormats. Edition 1 production will be limited and is likely already sold out by the time you’re reading this. However, GMC wouldn’t comment on the exact number to be built. Edition 1 vehicles will start at $105,595 and jump up to $110,595 if the Extreme Off-Road package is added. Edition 1 vehicles will be available in “early 2023.”
Coming next off the line will be the three-motor EV3X model and two-motor EV2X. The EV3X will start at $99,595, while EV2X starts at $89,595. The EV2X model drops from 830 hp to 625 hp and from 11,500 lb-ft of torque to 7,400 lb-ft (or 700 lb-ft in real life). Both models are eligible to add the Extreme Off-Road package, too, and both will be available in “spring 2023.” Rounding out the lineup is the base EV2 model, which has a lesser range of just 250 miles and a starting price of just $79,995. EV2 models will be available in “spring 2024.” All prices include destination charge.
