IMI warns of worrying picture surrounding apprenticeship starts

The IMI has warned of a “worrying picture” when it comes to apprenticeship commences.

It not too long ago launched new evaluation displaying that there was a 67% increase in apprenticeship starts off in the entire educational calendar year 2020/21 compared to 2019/20. #

Nonetheless, while this is 16% bigger than pre-pandemic levels, the actuality is that apprentice begins had slowed down noticeably prior to the pandemic.

Joanna Hollingdale, professions and university student membership manager of the IMI claimed: “Automotive apprenticeship begins have had a person of the smallest share yearly boosts, with only vacation and tourism (no boost), manufacturing (1%) and sport, leisure & recreation (52%) with smaller will increase.

“Yet our sector has played a basic part all through the pandemic – keeping Britain going – and has a major contribution to make in the government’s Decarbonisation Plan.

“What especially fears us is the deficiency of consider-up of the apprenticeship levy. Only 35% of automotive apprenticeships were levy-funded in 2020/21 in contrast to all apprentices that were being 61% levy funded.

“With these a huge job ahead of the sector in phrases of currently being ready for the new automotive innovation – from ADAS and related to zero emissions – it is important that employers build their pipeline of a qualified workforce and the apprenticeship levy can perform a critical function in supporting this process.”
